Udaipur from October to March: Weather, Festivals and Crowds, Month by Month

By Aavre    October 2026    7 min read

Our monsoon guide made the case for visiting Udaipur when nobody else does. This one is for everyone else. From October to March the rains are gone, the skies are clear and the city is at its most comfortable, which is exactly why most of the year's visitors arrive in these six months.

Peak season is not one season, though. October still feels like the end of summer, January can be properly cold at night, and by March the heat is coming back. Festivals, weddings and holidays shift the crowds week by week. Here is how the months compare, so you can pick the one that suits your trip.

October: green hills and full lakes

Days are still warm, around 33°C, with nights near 18°C. After a good monsoon the lakes are full and the Aravallis around the city stay green well into the month, which makes October the best time for photographs. Crowds build slowly and hotel rates are still below their winter peak, especially in the first half of the month.

Dussehra falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, with effigy burnings across the city in the evening. Plan sightseeing for the mornings and keep the afternoons slow while the sun is strong.

November: Diwali and the start of wedding season

The heat breaks. Expect days around 30°C and cooler nights near 13°C. Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, and for several evenings around it the old city, the ghats and the havelis along Lake Pichola are lit with lamps. It is one of the most beautiful weeks of the year to be here, and one of the busiest for domestic travel, so book early.

November is also when Udaipur's wedding season begins. Lake palaces and heritage hotels host large weddings almost every weekend until February, which fills hotels and keeps local drivers and cars in heavy demand.

December: peak of the peak

Days settle around 26°C and nights fall to about 9°C, colder on some nights. The Shilpgram Utsav, the annual crafts and folk arts fair at Shilpgram on the edge of the city, usually runs from 21 to 30 December, and it is worth an afternoon for the music, food and handmade work from across western India.

The week from Christmas to New Year is the busiest of the entire year. Hotels sell out, rates are at their highest and the popular sights are crowded from mid morning. If you are coming that week, book everything in advance and start your days early.

Daylight is short in December and January, with sunset before 6 pm. On day trips to Kumbhalgarh or Chittorgarh, leave Udaipur by 8 or 9 in the morning so you have time at the fort before the light goes.

January: crisp, clear and cold at night

January is the coldest month. Days are around 24 to 25°C and comfortable for walking, but nights average about 8°C and can drop to 3 or 4°C. The skies are usually at their clearest, which makes the views from Sajjangarh and the forts outside the city especially good.

Crowds ease after the New Year, then pick up again for the Republic Day long weekend around 26 January. Kites fill the sky around Makar Sankranti in mid January.

February: the best balance

If we had to pick one month, it would be February. Days are around 28°C, nights near 10°C, the light is soft and the crowds are thinner than in December. Wedding season is still running, so book transport ahead on weekends, but otherwise this is Udaipur at its easiest.

March: Holi and the turn towards summer

The heat returns through the month, with days reaching about 33°C by the end of March. Holi is the highlight: Holika Dahan falls on Sunday, 21 March 2027, and the royal bonfire ceremony at the City Palace is the best known in the city. Colours are played on Monday, 22 March 2027. Gangaur follows soon after, on 9 April 2027, with processions by the lakes.

Early March is still pleasant and noticeably quieter than the winter months. Late March is best for travellers who do not mind warm afternoons.

Day trips are at their best now

The cooler months are the right time for the long day trips that are hard work in summer. Walking the ramparts at Kumbhalgarh or Chittorgarh in the midday sun is a very different experience in January than in May. Ranakpur opens to visitors from around midday, which suits the later winter mornings, and Nathdwara fits easily into half a day. Our guide to the best day trips from Udaipur has the details for each.

What to pack

Light cotton for the daytime in every month. From late November to mid February add a warm layer, a sweater or a light jacket, for early mornings, evenings by the lakes and the drive back from a day trip. Sunglasses and sunscreen are useful all season. For temples and palaces, carry socks, since you will often be barefoot on cold marble in winter.

Getting around in peak season

This is where peak season catches people out. App cabs are hard to find at the airport and at busy times, and between November and February many local drivers are booked for weddings. Book your airport pickup and any day trips before you arrive, particularly around Diwali and the last week of December. Our guide to taxi apps in Udaipur explains why, and our fixed fares stay the same all season, with no festive or year end surge.
